What is Dry Macular Degeneration?

A common eye disorder among people over 65 is Dry Macular Degeneration. This eye disease causes blurred and/or reduced central vision within the macula. The Macula part of our eyes is responsible for clear vision in direct line of sight. As the eye disease progresses your vision gets worse affecting ability to read, drive and recognize faces. It does not mean you will lose all of your eye sight.

What are symptoms of Dry Macular Degeneration?
  1. straight lines may seem bent
  2. reduced central vision in one or both eyes
  3. a need for bright light when reading or doing close work
  4. difficulty adapting to low light levels when entering a dimly lit room or area
  5. blurry printed words
  6. hard to recognize faces
See your doctor if you notice changes in your central vision and/or the ability to see colors and fine detail. If you are over 50, these changes may be the first signs of macular degeneration.

It is unknown exactly why some people develop macular degeneration and others do not. Research indicates it might be related to heredity and environmental factors.

Factors that may increase chances of developing macular degeneration include:
  1. Age: This eye disease is most common in people over 65
  2. Family history of macular degeneration. 
  3. Race: Macular degeneration is most common in whites.
  4. Smoking: Smoking or being exposed to secondary smoke regularly has been known to increase the chances of developing macular degeneration.
  5. Obesity: Being obese may increase chances that early or intermediate macular degeneration will progress to more severe forms of the disease.
  6. Heart disease: If you have had or have heart disease you may have a higher risk of developing macular degeneration.
How can you reduce your risk for developing dry macular degeneration?
  1. Routine eye exam with the dilated eye exam
  2. Don't smoke or expose yourself to secondary smokers
  3. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly
  4. Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidant vitamins to reduce risk of developing this eye disease
  5. Include fish in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may reduce risk of macular degeneration. Nuts that contain omega-3 fatty acids are also recommended.
  6. Eye vitamins containing Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Astaxanthin are recommended.

What are Omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3’s belong to a group of fatty acids known as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Because the body does not manufacture them, Omega-3's are classified as "essential fatty acids" (EFA’s), as it is essential they be obtained from food. There are three important Omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in fish, while ALA is found only in plant foods such as flaxseed meal. The body can convert ALA into small amounts of EPA and DHA, but recent studies have indicated that our bodies are somewhat inefficient in this conversion. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement your diet with these nutrients in order to significantly change your levels of Omega-3’s.
