Dry Eyes Are a Common Eye Problem

One of the most common eye conditions especially among people over 50 is "dry eyes." This is where you become unable to produce adequate lubrication for your eyes. There are two main reasons for having dry eyes. They are:

1. if you don't produce enough tears or
2. if you produce poor-quality tears

Dry eyes can be painful and very uncomfortable. I know, because I have this condition. Symptoms can be:

• stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in the eyes
• stringy mucous in or around the eyes
• sensitivity to light
• eye redness
• feeling like you have something in your eyes
• having a difficult time wearing contact lenses
• difficulty with night time driving
• watery eyes which is like having a sensation of something in the eyes (you would think someone with dry eyes would not have watery eyes, but sometimes this does occur)
• blurred vision or eye fatigue

Times you may experience dry eyes are:

• being on an airplane
• in an air-conditioned room
• sitting in front of fans
• riding a bike
• looking at a computer screen for hours

You should see your doctor if you experience prolonged signs and symptoms of dry eyes. There is prescription medication that can help.

Risk Factors for development dry eyes include:

• aging
• medical conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, thyroid disorders and vitamin A deficiencies
• certain medications can cause dry eyes such as antihistamines, decongestants, hormone replacement therapy, antidepressants, drugs for high blood pressure, acne, birth control and Parkinson's disease
• women tend to have more dry eye problems than men especially due to hormonal changes in pregnancy, using birth control pills or menopause
• a diet low in Vitamin A has been found to be a factor creating the dry eye condition
• a diet low in omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish, walnuts and vegetable oils
• wearing contact lenses can cause dry eyes

There are some complications you can experience from having dry eyes. They include:

• eye infections
• damage to the surface of your eyes such as eye inflammation, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcer and vision problems
• dry eyes can make it difficult to perform every day activities such as reading and working with the hands in close work such as crocheting, knitting or beading.

Avoid:

• air blowing into your eye like from hair dryers, car heaters, air conditioners or fans
• add moisture to your air in winter, use a humidifier for dry indoor air
• take eye breaks, close your eyes for a few minutes or blink repeatedly for a few seconds
• stop smoking or don't smoke
