Simple Tips for Keeping Healthy Eyes

As part of a complete health program we must never overlook the eyes. There are several things you can do every day to keep your eyes healthy. Of course most of us what to be sure we are seeing the best we can see. If you will follow these simple tips well into your golden years you will have a better chance of keeping good vision. Just think for a moment, what good is a lean and muscular body if we have poor eye sight? We need to take care of our eyes just the same as we take care to build a perfect body or a muscular, strong body.

Tip #1: Have a yearly comprehensive dilated eye exam. Many people like to skip the dilated eye exam. Putting the drops to dilate can give you a tiny sting and after the exam you will have to wear the dark glasses in sunshine, however, this yearly exam is as necessary as finding out what kind of correction you need in new glasses or contacts. Many common eye diseases can be detected through the dilated eye exam. They are:
  • glaucoma
  • diabetic eye disease
  • age-related macular degeneration
The dilated exam allows the examiner to get a good look at the back of your eyes examining them for damage and/or disease.

Tip #2: Know your family's personal eye health history. For example, is there cataracts in your family lines or age related macular degeneration. If so, you could have a higher risk for these conditions.

Tip #3: Eat right. We have long heard eating carrots is good for the eyes. Well, it turns out, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables of all kinds, particularly dark leafy green like spinach, kale or collard greens is just as important as eating carrots alone. Research also continues to reveal a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, and halibut is also important to healthy eyes. If you have trouble getting a lot of the omega-3 fatty acids into your daily diet, you can always supplement with a high quality Fish Oil supplement.

Tip #4: Maintain a healthy weight. Believe it or not being overweight or obese also increases your risk of developing unhealthy eyes due to diabetes or other systemic conditions.

Tip #7: Wear your sun glasses to protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Tip #8: If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you need to take time to blink and use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 second to reduce the eye strain.

Tip #9: Clean your hands and contacts properly to avoid risk of infection.
